Hove Hideaway

Danielle’s overlooked, overgrown, uninteresting space was transformed in to a peaceful and private Marrakesh-style hideaway for her and her son to enjoy.

The Brief

Danielle had a very overgrown space that offered no interest for her or her son. As she had a high-stress job which often found her working from home, I wanted to create an area that offered both entertainment for her son and solace for when she had a few stolen moments. For inspiration, Danielle suggested the idea of a Marrakesh Hideaway.

The Result

Once my tree surgeon had removed most of the overgrown planting, we set about building a private patio area, with a pergola structure above to offer some privacy from the overlooking flats.

The patched-up brickwork was united by painting all of the walls, with colour choice being paramount. Offering good shadow detailing, the colour we chose looks good in strong sunshine but also carries well in typical British overcast conditions!

We also built Danielle’s son his own hideaway den on stilts, with high, native surrounding planting to give the feeling of seclusion. He is a prolific bookworm, so it felt important to give him a quiet space he could make his own.
