This garden was a joy to redesign. You don’t get many sheltered, south facing, clay soil gardens in Brighton and Hove. First things first, banish the orange fence paint to ‘Room 101’. The light levels were so strong that we could have painted the fence black or white but the garden gets so hot in summer that I worry I might have blinded the owners. The clients were very keen wildlife and bird watchers so I specified successional pollen sources and bird feeders to attract local moths and butterflies. The garden is fully accessible at night by utilising solar lighting. We also incorporated a substantial wood store with a green roof, storage and dining for six.
